short heath station and gasworks from the air.Transport

An excellent aerial photo of Clarkes Lane, Sort Heath Station and Willenhall Gas Works.

This station was on the Midland Railway line from Walsall to Wolverhampton via Willenhall.  It closed to passengers in the 1930s but remained open for freight trains.  Coal for the gasworks was delivered by rail, all the traffic had to be brought by trains from the Willenhall direction due to the lack of a crossing at Short Heath.

The line was eventually severed by the construction of the M6 motorway and is now a walkway in parts. It was at one time planned to build part of the Midland Metro along the route.

This site is now partly occupied by the Fire Station and part of the wall of the gas works can still be seen.
